NAIROBI Dmitrij Jaskin Jersey , Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Nairobi Securities Exchange(NSE) benchmark index gained a record 42 points on Monday to crossthe 3,800 mark as it defied elections fever.
The NSE 20 Share Index was up 42.38 points to close at 3,818.27amid massive decline in turnover as Kenya readies for pollsTuesday.
At least 15 stocks went up by between 1 percent and 10 percentto rally the benchmark index to the new high. Foreign participationstood at 43 percent and local participation stood at 57percent.
On the other hand, the NSE All share Index (NASI) was up 0.66points to close at 158.83 points as it sustained an upwardtrend.
Turnover declined 64 percent to 3 million U.S. dollars on Mondayon a volume of 10.4 million shares from 28 million worth 8.4million dollars on Friday.
The most traded counters were Home Afrika, Crown Berger,Safaricom, Cooperative Bank and Centum moving 1.6 million, 1.6million, 1.5 million, 1.5 million and 600,000 sharesrespectively.
However, Crown Berger, Safaricom, Standard Chartered Bank,Centum and Cooperative Bank accounted for 84.3 percent of the totalturnover.
At the bond market, turnover declined to 6 million dollars downfrom 20 million dollars in the previous session. Enditem
KHARTOUM, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 120 Sudanese couples happily tied the knot together on Tuesday in a collective wedding ceremony attended by Health Minister Mamoun Humaida.
The collective wedding ceremony, the second this year held in the capital, was hosted by the Youth Support Charity Fund (YSCF), which aims to help young couples get married without taking up too much financial and social burdens.
So far, the fund has successfully helped 7443 young couples get married in the first half of 2017, through its "Collective Marriage" program.
"This program aims to help the youths get married, meet their marriage requirements, and provide productive projects to help the married couples settle," YSCF Director General Mahdi Mohamed Ahmed told Xinhua.
Ahmed said that the program is aimed at combating some negative social ideas and practices by helping the young people get married, set up new families and integrate into the society, free of huge financial burden.
The fund has recruited public figures such as popular singers and movies actors to publicize its program and raise the public awareness of the new ideas about marriage, so to combat harmful traditions of marriage.
It will also help young Sudanese avoid the influence of illegal drugs and extremist ideologies.
The YSCF program has been praised and supported by the government.
"The collective marriage is the most successful means to help the biggest number of youths get married. We support this program and hope it would find support from all categories of the society," Humaida said.
Mohamed Ahmed Hassan and Al-Toma Hussein Ali, a newly-wed couple who attended the collective wedding ceremony Tuesday, were extremely happy about this.
"This is a wonderful idea to assist the youths to get married. We are extremely happy with completing our wedding," Hassan told Xinhua.
